Fire Name: Carlton Complex (South Zone)        Start Date: 7/14/2014        Cause: Lightening

Location: The Carlton Complex South Zone is located on private, state and federally managed lands north of Chelan, Washington.

Current Information:

Today, firefighters in the Carlton Complex South Zone made headway on suppression efforts as they built additional fireline and mopped up to ensure the fire remained within containment lines. Construction of firelines in the Black Canyon area will be slow and difficult due to heavy vegetation and steep terrain. Little fire activity was observed today. “Super Scoopers” fixed wing aircraft assisted firefighters, dropping water on hot areas of the fire in support of fireline construction. Twenty-five to 35 mph winds tested firelines, drying fine fuels such as grass and brush. At this time, there is no threat from fire activity to the cities of Pateros, Brewster, Chelan, or Manson.

Ten to 20 mph winds with gusts to 30 mph are expected this evening. Wind speeds will lessen around10 p.m. The most active fire tonight will be in the dead and down trees. Firefighters will be on the lookout for hot rolling material in steep drainages, dislodged rocks, and falling snags (dead trees).

Tonight, crews will continue to hold the fire by patrolling areas where the line has been completed and by extinguishing hot spots along the fire perimeter near Black Canyon.

Advisories:

Portions of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest remain closed due to the fire activity. Please contact the Fire Information line listed at the top of the page for more specific information.
