Fire Area Map

VIDEOS

The Fire Behavior Analyst flew again today, this time in the Beaver Creek Road and Hungry Mountain areas and again found a mosaic of burned and unburned trees, and no significant fire spread.  He found areas to the north, northeast, east and southwest smoking due to the increased heat, but with no significant fire activity.  This video shows an intermix of brown and green trees, as well as some areas that were more severely burned. The point of showing this video is to ensure you that not all the acreage inside the perimeter line, is black. Much has burned lightly close to the ground. This will provide enhanced wildlife habitat and better grazing for live stock.

This is an aerial video of the fire as it moved through Black Canyon and Antione Canyon area in the south zone around 4pm on Monday July 21st.

It's a common misconception that the line showing a fire perimeter means that everything inside the perimeter is burned black.  That's simply not the case, in fact, there are many colors inside the burn.  The fire mosaic is a combination of black where the fire scorched everything, brown where it burned but not completely, yellow where it burned lightly and large areas that remain green.

This video, shot in a helicopter on July 25th by Jeremy Fallon- Fire Behavior Analyst, begins on the west side of the fire just north of Twisp and heads due east toward Loup Loup Ski Area and then turns north. You will see light smoke, some portions of paved road which is highway 20, but all the colors of the fire mosaic and unburned areas.

Helicopter flight from Twisp to Loup Loup and then Notrth.

When Fire Operations people make decisions about tactics for fighting fire, they keep firefighter and public safety at the forefront in the decision-making process.  Many factors are considered when making the choice to go DIRECT or INDIRECT in fighting the fire.  Here, Tony Gilmer, Safety Officer with the Washington Interagency Team 2, talks about safety and the decision to go direct or indirect.

  1. What is the area called that is burning NE of Pearrygin Lake close to Winthrop? Many residents live directly to the west, south, and SW and appear to be within 3 to 5 miles of this section of the fire.

  2. How close is the fire to Winthrop and what is the air quality? Looking at traveling to the area this weekend but concerned about the fire.

    Thanks
