This update covers the EAST ZONE of the Carlton Complex.
Firefighters working Sunday were able to take advantage of calm weather to
safely establish fire containment lines. Lines on the east side of the fire
from Brewster, north to Malott have held for 48 hours. The priority is to
establish more containment lines to prevent fire movement into areas near homes
and communities. Firefighters have also bulldozed containment lines south of
highway 20 and Leader Lake and are working to tie in with containment lines to
the south near Malott.
Today firefighters plan to use another day of expected quiet
winds to extend containment lines in the Loup Loup summit area and in the area
between North Cook Mountain Road and Fox Mountain Road east of Loup Loup Pass and
south of Highway 20. Aircraft is scouting the area to determine the best
strategy for firefighters and equipment working on containment lines.
Fire crews face difficult challenges working in several
steep canyon areas that are heavily forested and covering a long distance fire
perimeter. In the Omak Zone, National Guard Blackhawk helicopters are dropping
water in the Fox Mountain area to assist with establishing containment lines.
Approximately 100 people attended a community information
meeting Sunday evening in Omak. Representatives from the Omak Zone Incident
Management Team, Red Cross, and Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency
Management, and the Public Utility District shared current information on fire
activity, power outages, and disaster recovery.
Highway 20 between Twisp and Okanogan has been reopened to
public traffic, but use caution due to heavy fire crew traffic on the highway.
